I really like this question because I think until we find the metaphor or practice that makes mindfulness real to us, it is hard to put it into practice. I have developed this ability to "look through" problems (whether it be a conflict with a person, or frustration in my mind, etc.) to see the lesson that is behind it. When I can see that lesson, I can attach to it emotionally. For example, when I am feeling bothered by having to do some chore, I see that it is just my amygdala trying to conserve energy. And I embrace the lesson of acceptance as I move my body toward doing the chore out of gratitude. Then... being in the moment... and fully engaging with the activity as if it was a blessing.
This video from Patch Adams is where I began learning this practice: https://youtu.be/gWOmq-C6go8
